What is the thermostat?

Thanks to the car thermostat, the temperature of the engine and of the coolant can be measured and regulated. Once the engine reaches a certain temperature, the thermostat (which is actually a valve) opens thereby starting the cooling process.

If the thermostat doesn’t work properly, the engine can get overheated. This can easily result in irreversible damage.
