What is a brake drum?
A brake drum is a cylindrical part made out of heat-conductive and wear-resistant cast iron. The brake drums are fixed closely to the brake shoes on the rear axle of a vehicle.
Inside the brake drums you will find a brake kit consisting of brake shoes and a brake cylinder. The latter is operated with brake fluid which is put under pressure when the driver presses the brake pedal.
The lining in the brake shoes is pressed to the inside of the brake drum thereby slowing the vehicle down.
