1. Exhaust manifold: joined to the engine at the cylinder head, the exhaust manifold collects exhaust gasses during the combustion process and funnels them through to the exhaust pipe.
2. Oxygen sensor: reacting to the oxygen levels in the exhaust, the oxygen sensor informs your car’s computer if it should send more or less fuel to the combustion chambers.
3. Exhaust pipes: a series of pipes connecting the entire exhaust system, from the engine to the exhaust pipe at the rear.
4. Catalytic converter: this device transforms harmful emissions, like carbon monoxide, into carbon dioxide and water vapour.
5. Silencer: a contraption for decreasing the noise made by the internal combustion engine.

How to Tell If You Need a New Exhaust System

There are a few tell-tale signs that mean you need to buy a new exhaust system. If you suddenly smell fumes in the passenger compartment, then your exhaust system could be faulty. If this happens, make sure to wind down all the windows until you can stop. Hissing and popping noises are also a sign that your exhaust system is malfunctioning, as is a noticeable decrease in fuel efficiency.
