Established as a consulting and development company in 1931 by Dr Ferdinand Porsche, the company first made waves in the auto world when it was given a contract to develop the “people’s car” for Volkswagen. The result was one of the most iconic cars ever: the Beetle. Following the instant success of this, in 1939 Ferdinand Porsche decided to pursue his dream of developing the perfect sports car, releasing the 64. By the 1950s the company had begun to make their presence felt on the racetrack with the Spyder 550, and by 1964, with the release of the iconic 911—a model that continues to this day— it became clear that Ferdinand Porsche had achieved his goal.
In the 1970s the company made history at the Paris Auto Show when it presented to the world it’s very first production sports car featuring a turbocharger and pressure regulator. Again, the iconic 911 model would figure at the centre of Porsche’s success. This model would continue to define the company throughout the 80s, with the 911 Carrera Speedster, featuring all-wheel drive, being one of the first vehicles to include ABS and electronic heating. However, in spite of these innovations, there are two things that have remained constant on each and every 911: the signature five-dial layout and the positon of the ignition key.
Today, staying true to its German roots, Porsche is part of the Volkswagen Group. And, despite being one of the youngest manufacturers on the market— just 60 years old—it’s firmly established itself as one of the industry leaders. In the 2000s the company entered the SUV market with the hugely successful Cayenne, and later the Panamera. Beyond this, the company is also known for the production of its supercars and hypercars—ensuring the Porsche name continues to lead the race both on and off the track.
