The Renault story

Established in 1899 by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand, Renault is now part of the larger Groupe Renault. This encompasses the international arm of the Renault company, alongside stakes in Nissan, Daimler, Dacia, and AvtoVAZ. The very first model manufactured by Renault was the 1CV which was sold to a friend of the family. The company took this cue and quickly began to manufacture its in-house Renault parts and engines, with the first mass production cars reaching the streets of Paris as taxis in 1905.

Early excursions into the motor racing world, alongside the design and manufacture of agricultural, industrial and military machinery, helped solidify Louis Renault’s reputation for innovation and technical proficiency. In fact, during Renault’s postwar resurgence, the 4CV designed in secret by Louis Renault during the occupation of France, went on to sell more than half a million units and rivalled the Morris Minor and the Volkswagen Beetle in popularity. Other successful models of the period included the Dauphine, the Renault 4 and the Renault 8.

1972 saw the introduction of the Renault 5, and the company continued to enjoy success through the 70s and 80s. Numerous other models were also introduced with varying amounts of success, however, when Renault launched the first European multi-purpose vehicle in the shape of the Espace, despite financial issues, it would take rival manufacturers another 12 years to match Renault’s innovative design. The same can be said for the Renault Twingo launched in 1992, a compact design that paved the way for the city car. The Renault Clio, launched in 1990, also went on to become one of Europe’s best selling designs.
