Formed when Swedish aerospace company Saab AB set out to build and manufacture a cheap family oriented vehicle, Saab Automobile AB brought affordable small cars to the general public at the conclusion of WWII. Since Volvo had already sewn up the luxury market, Saab saw a niche that needed to be filled, designing four Ursaab (original Saab) prototypes that went on to become the Saab 92.
The Saab 92 went into production in 1949, going on to sell more than 20,000 cars through the 1950s. In 1955 the 92 was redesigned and subsequently rereleased as the Saab 93, this was the first Saab model to include the now iconic trapezoid grill. Soon after, Saab Automobile added the Saab 95 alongside their first performance car dubbed the Saab 94, otherwise known as the first of the Saab Sonnets.
During this period the company also released the Saab 96, however, in 1969 Saab AB merged with commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania-Vabis AB and began engineering Saab parts for the new Saab 99. This combi coupe model came to define the Saab body style and, in 1976 the millionth Saab was manufactured.
Over the next 30 years, Saab AB experienced mixed fortunes, suffering bankruptcy and passing through the hands of larger companies such as General Motors and Spyker/Swedish Automobile, finally coming to rest under National Electric Vehicle Sweden. However the subsidiary Saab Automobile Parts was not included in this final deal. NEVS currently manufactures the Saab 9-3 under the Saab brand and plans to introduce a number of electric models in the future.
