Volvo, part of the Volvo group, began solely as a vehicle manufacturer. Following the death of his wife in a car accident, Assar Gabrielsson teamed up with Gustaf Larsson to create a safer car, and in 1927, the first Volvo was produced. However, it was a sale of trucks that proved to be an immediate success for the company. By the 30s, the company moved into large vehicle production, such as buses, since cars were still expensive for the majority of people. It wasn’t until 1944 at the Royal Tennis Hall major exhibition in Stockholm that Volvo debuted its first serious car: the PV444. It became an instant success; with supply unable to meet demand, people were soon willing to pay twice as much. By 1955, the company had sold 100,000 units.
Spurred on by this success, in 1961 the company released the Amazon, a two door saloon reputed to be one of the safest cars in the world, as well as the hugely successful P1800—the company’s first sports car. This same year, Volvo parts reached new heights with the introduction of the B18 engine. Throughout this time Volvo also expanded into haulers, trucks, tractors, airplanes, forest machinery and multi-terrain track vehicles. And, in keeping with Gabrielsson’s vision of safer roads, Volvo released detailed reports in 1968 demonstrating the effectiveness of seatbelts.
During the 70s, production in Volvo parts and vehicles expanded in all areas, but in the 80s the 760 car became a global success, contributing to the Volvo aesthetic for many years after. Throughout the next two decades models such as the 700 and 400 series would be lauded for their safety, handling, and space. The 90s ushered in a new image for the company as they moved to sleeker, more rounded models such as the S40 and V40, while the C70 coupé model demonstrated an ability to blend performance, style, and safety—something Volvo continues to provide until this day.
